Poker in the UK is something which has developed and grown over the years very well. With live televised tournaments finding their way onto our T.V screens in early programmes such as ‘late night poker’ this caused many people with a passing interest in the game, to become increasingly captivated by it. Along with with this particular programme, were highlights of the World Series of Poker, bringing legends of the game into the spotlight for all British followers of the game to see.

Poker has of course been growing across the world for some years now, and it is difficult to say whether this would have still been the case if not for televised poker events. I think it would, although not quite on the same scale. whatever the reasons, poker in the UK is flourishing. Many home games are being played across the country, and I am sure casinos are seeing a marked increase in custom compared to 10 years ago too.

I think it is important that this trend continues in the UK, because in terms of British top professionals I feel that the UK is lagging behind a little. I am sure there are some who would point to the likes of David Ulliot and Joe Beevers as top quality British players, but I have to say I don’t agree. Beevers has no WSOP bracelets and no WPT titles, and Ulliot has only one of each. Don’t get me wrong, this is an excellent achievement to even win one, but it doesn’t exactly place such players amongst the greatest in the game.

We shouldn’t feel too down about such matters though, there will always be great players from other countries to capture the imagination, and there will always be poker played and enjoyed in our isles. That in itself, is a great thing.
